This article explains how to select the correct extension cables and adapter (converter) cables when installing auxiliary cameras on fleet vehicles using the RZ41 Vision Hub. The type of camera and the type of extension cable you choose determine whether adapter cables are needed and where they are placed in the wiring chain.
RZ41 Vision Hub
The RZ41 Vision Hub (RZY-HVH-0041-01) is the in-cab recording device. Its aux camera input is a 4-pin male connector. This means every cable run, regardless of what camera or extension cable you use, must ultimately terminate in a 4-pin female connector inside the cab to plug into the RZ41.
Extension Cable Orientation
Every extension cable has one male end and one female end. Which end goes outside the vehicle depends on the cable type:
Cable Type | Outside Vehicle | Inside Cab |
Standard 4-Pin | Male end | Female end (plugs directly into the RX41) |
Stainless Steel 6-Pin | Female end | Male end (requires adapted to reach RX41) |
If you are purchasing a stainless steel extension cable, you should also be purchasing a ruggedized stainless steel camera for the best durability and weather resistance.
Camera Connector Types
HD Fleet carries two categories of aux cameras with different connector types:
Camera | Part Number | Pin Count | Gender |
Side-Mount TVI | RRZY-ECAMC124SHD | 4-Pin | Female |
Rear-View TVI | RZY-ECAMC124FHD | 4-Pin | Female |
Bullet TVI | RZY-ECAM164BHD | 4-Pin | Female |
Ruggedized Square | RZY-C4F156HD | 6-Pin | Male |
Adapter (Converter) Cables
Adapter cables bridge the gap between 6-pin and 4-pin connectors. There are two types:
Part Number | From | To | Description |
RZY-AD227 | 6-Pin Female | 4-Pin Male | Steps down from 6-pin to 4-pin with female connectors on both ends |
RZY-AD228 | 4-Pin Male | 6-Pin Female | Steps down from 6-pin to 4-pin with male connectors on both ends
|
Wiring Scenarios
There are four possible combinations of camera type and extension cable type. Each scenario below describes the wiring chain from camera to RZ41 Vision Hub and identifies which adapter cables are required.
Scenario 1: Standard TVI Camera + Standard Extension Cable
Adapters Required: None
This is the simplest setup. The standard TVI camera has a 4-pin female connector. It plugs directly into the male end of the standard 4-pin extension cable outside the vehicle. Inside the cab, the female end of the extension cable plugs directly into the RZ41 Vision Hub (4-pin male). No adapter cables are needed because all components are 4-pin and the genders align naturally.
Wiring chain: Camera (4F) --> Std Extension Male End (4M) --- cable --- Std Extension Female End (4F) --> RZ41 (4M)
Scenario 2: Ruggedized Camera + Stainless Steel Extension Cable
adapters required: 1 -- RZY-AD227 (inside cab)
The ruggedized camera (6-pin male) connects directly to the female end of the stainless steel extension cable outside the vehicle. No adapter is needed at this junction because both are 6-pin. Inside the cab, the stainless cable's male end is 6-pin, but the RZ41 is 4-pin. You need one adapter: the RZY-AD227 (6-pin female to 4-pin female). The AD227 accepts the stainless cable's 6-pin male end on one side and provides a 4-pin female connection on the other side that plugs into the RZ41.
Wiring chain: Camera (6M) --> SS Extension Female End (6F) --- cable --- SS Extension Male End (6M) --> AD227 (6F-to-4F) --> RZ41 (4M)
Scenario 3: Ruggedized Camera + Standard Extension Cable
adapters required: 1 -- RZY-AD227 (outside vehicle)
The ruggedized camera is 6-pin male, but the standard extension cable is 4-pin. Outside the vehicle, you need the RZY-AD227 adapter (6-pin female to 4-pin female) between the camera and the extension cable. The AD227 accepts the camera's 6-pin male plug on one side and provides a 4-pin female connection on the other side, which then connects to the male end of the standard extension cable. Inside the cab, the female 4-pin end of the standard extension cable plugs directly into the RZ41 with no adapter needed.
Wiring chain: Camera (6M) --> AD227 (6F-to-4F) --> Std Extension Male End (4M) --- cable --- Std Extension Female End (4F) --> RZ41 (4M)
Scenario 4: Standard TVI Camera + Stainless Steel Extension Cable
adapters required: 2 -- RZY-AD228 (outside) + RZY-AD227 (inside)
This combination requires two adapter cables because the pin counts and genders do not match at either end. Outside the vehicle, the standard TVI camera has a 4-pin female connector and the stainless cable has a 6-pin female end. You need the RZY-AD228 adapter (6-pin male to 4-pin male) to bridge between them: its 4-pin male side connects to the camera's 4-pin female, and its 6-pin male side connects to the stainless cable's 6-pin female end. Inside the cab, the stainless cable's 6-pin male end needs to reach the RZ41's 4-pin male input. You need the RZY-AD227 adapter (6-pin female to 4-pin female) to step down from 6-pin to 4-pin.
Wiring chain: Camera (4F) --> AD228 (4M-to-6M) --> SS Extension Female End (6F) --- cable --- SS Extension Male End (6M) --> AD227 (6F-to-4F) --> RZ41 (4M)
Quick Reference Decision Matrix
Use this table to quickly determine which adapter cables are needed based on the camera and extension cable combination being installed.
Camera Type | Cable Type | Outside Adapter | Inside Adapter | Total Adapters |
Standard TVI (4-Pin Female) | Standard 4-Pin | None | None | 0 |
| Standard TVI (4-Pin Female) | Stainless 6-Pin | RZY-AD228 (6M to 4M) | RZY-AD227 (6F to 4F) | 2 |
Ruggedized (6-Pin Male) | Stainless 6-Pin | None | RZY-AD227 (6F to 4F) | 1 |
Ruggedized (6-Pin Male) | Standard 4-Pin | RZY-AD227 (6F to 4F) | None | 1 |

Troubleshooting / FAQ
Q: My camera won't connect to the extension cable. What's wrong?
A: Check whether you have a pin count mismatch. If the camera is 6-pin (ruggedized) and the cable is 4-pin (standard), or vice versa, you need an adapter cable. See the Decision Matrix above to determine which adapter is required.
Q: Which end of the extension cable goes outside?
A: For standard 4-pin cables, the male end goes outside. For stainless steel 6-pin cables, the female end goes outside. This is consistent across all scenarios.
Q: Do I really need two adapters for a standard camera with a stainless cable?
A: Yes. When you pair a standard TVI camera (4-pin female) with a stainless steel extension cable (6-pin), the pin counts don't match at either end. You need RZY-AD228 outside the vehicle and RZY-AD227 inside the cab. This is why we recommend pairing stainless cables with ruggedized cameras to minimize adapter requirements.
Q: Can I use multiple extension cables daisy-chained together?
A: This is not recommended. Use a single extension cable of the appropriate length for the best signal quality. If you need a longer run, select the next size up from the available cable lengths.
