USB Repeater Extension Cable for RZ1 Solutions

USB Repeater Extension Cable for RZ1 Solutions

Overview

The USB Repeater Extension Cable is an active USB 2.0 extension cable used to increase the distance between the RoadEazy RZ1 camera and its gateway device. The cable contains a built-in signal booster chipset that amplifies and regenerates the USB signal over longer distances, preventing data loss and performance degradation. This cable is required when the standard USB cable included with the RZ1 camera is not long enough to reach the gateway, which is common in vehicles with longer cabs, unusual mounting positions, or when the gateway is installed in a non-standard location.

USB Cable Length Specifications

The USB 2.0 specification limits passive cable length to approximately 5 meters (16.4 feet). Active repeater cables contain built-in signal booster electronics that regenerate the USB signal, allowing longer runs.

Key Specifications

Specification
Value
USB Standard
USB 2.0 (480 Mbps)
Max Passive Cable Length
16.4 feet (5 meters)
Single Active Repeater Cable
Up to 15-20 feet per cable
Daisy-Chain Maximum (USB 2.0 spec)
Up to 98 feet (30 meters) with 5 hubs
HD Fleet Recommended Maximum
30 feet (see important note below)
Connector Type
USB Type-A Male to USB Type-A Female

WarningImportant
Do NOT exceed 30 feet of total USB cable length for RoadEazy camera installations. If you require a cable run beyond 30 feet, you MUST move to the TVI solution using the RZ41 auxiliary camera box instead of USB extension.

When to Use the USB Repeater Cable

The standard USB cable included with the RZ1 camera (approximately 6 feet) is sufficient for most standard installations where the camera is windshield-mounted and the gateway is under the dash. The repeater cable is needed in the following scenarios:

Scenario
Recommended Cable
Standard install: camera on windshield, gateway under dash
Standard included USB cable (no repeater needed)
Clean routed install: cable run through headliner, down A-pillar, under dash trim
RZY-USB-EXTENDER-REPEATER-15 (15 ft)
Gateway mounted behind/under seat or in an equipment compartment
RZY-USB-EXTENDER-REPEATER-15 or -30
Long cab vehicles (Hino, Freightliner, Peterbilt) with non-standard gateway placement
RZY-USB-EXTENDER-REPEATER-15 or -30 depending on routing
Distance exceeds 30 feet
DO NOT USE USB -- Switch to TVI solution with RZ41 box

Beyond 30 Feet: TVI Solution with RZ41

When the required cable distance between the RoadEazy camera and the gateway exceeds 30 feet, USB is no longer a viable option. You must transition to the TVI (Transport Video Interface) solution using the RZ41 auxiliary camera box.

The RZ41 uses analog TVI video transmission over coaxial cable, which supports significantly longer cable runs without signal degradation. This makes it the appropriate solution for large vehicles, trailers, buses, or any installation where camera-to-gateway distance exceeds 30 feet.

Installation Notes

  1. The USB repeater cable is bus-powered and does not require an external power source.

  2. Ensure all USB connections are secure and not subject to vibration or movement that could cause intermittent disconnects.

  3. Route cables away from high-voltage wiring and power sources to minimize electromagnetic interference.

  4. Use cable ties or adhesive clips to secure the cable along the routing path.

  5. Verify the camera is fully operational after installation by checking live video feed in the RoadEazy portal.

  6. Active repeater cables provide approximately 90-150 mA of power to the connected device. If the camera requires more, a powered USB hub may be needed between the cable and device.
