Getting Started with Facial ID (FID)

Getting Started with Facial ID (FID)

What is Facial ID?

Facial ID (FID) is a camera-based driver identification system that automatically recognizes which driver is operating a vehicle. Using in-cab camera footage, FID matches drivers' faces against enrolled profiles to provide accurate driver attribution for every trip.

How Does It Work?

FID uses your existing in-cab dash cameras along with facial recognition technology. The system works in three stages:
  1. Driver Enrollment - Each driver registers their face using the HD Fleet mobile app.
  2. Facial Identification - Up to 3 videos are sent to EdgeTensor API for identification. These videos do not get sent until the vehicle is going >5 mph. It sends the first video and can take up to 5 minutes to match. If it doesn't get a match, it sends a second video, which can take up to another 5 minutes to match. If there is still no match it sends a third video which can take up to 5 minutes to match. If there is still no match, it shows the driver as Unrecognized. In certain circumstances the system can "guess" who a driver was based on certain criteria being met. Drivers that are matched using this logic will display in BLUE in the vehicle's Trip History.
  3. Trip Tagging - Every trip is automatically tagged with the identified driver when a match is found. If not found, the trip is marked as an Unrecognized Driver and must be manually matched.

What Are My Options for Enrolling Drivers?

  1. Mobile App Enrollment - The primary contact at the company sends drivers the mobile enrollment link. Each driver takes a video through the app to register their face.
  2. Auto Enrollment - HD Fleet can enable auto enrollment so the system automatically creates driver profiles from in-cab camera footage. This requires less manual effort but may need follow-up to verify accuracy. It is not recommended to enable auto enrollment until all of your drivers have initially registered with the mobile app. This is a great way to add new drivers after your initial crew is registered. If you'd like this enabled, please reach out to HD Fleet Support.

Requirements

  1. Camera Placement - Cameras must be mounted at eye level for the driver. If the camera angle doesn't capture the driver's face properly, enrollment will stay in the "ENROLLMENT" stage. EdgeTensor can advise on camera repositioning if needed.
  2. Mobile App - Drivers will need access to the HD Fleet mobile app for the enrollment process.

What Does It Cost?

  1. FID is sold in packs of 50 vehicles.
  2. Your HD Fleet representative will provide an estimate based on your fleet size.
  3. A free 30-day trial is available if you'd like to test FID before committing.

How Do I Get Started?

  1. Make sure that you are legally allowed to collect data from your employees. Your HR Handbook is the suggested location where you add your Facial Release Form or to your new employee on-boarding documents that are signed.
  2. Your HD Fleet representative will provide a cost estimate along with an authorization form.
  3. Once you accept, you'll complete a brief authorization at https://hdfleet.com/fid giving approval to capture driver images.
  4. If you do not already have your drivers registered on the platform, you'll need to add your drivers to the platform.
  5. You will receive a mobile enrollment link to distribute to your drivers and training videos/documentation to get you started from your HD Fleet representative. You can also access the training information in our Knowledge Base here.
  6. Your drivers will enroll through the mobile app.
  7. You'll reach out to HD Fleet Support once your Drivers are registered advising that they are registered and you're ready to turn on FID.
    1. There is approximately a 24 hour (business days) turn around time for enablement.
    2. We highly recommend at least 80%+ of your drivers to have completed the mobile enrollment prior to enabling FID as enabling FID disables QR code and manual driver assignments.
    3. When Facial ID is enabled, the default driver is cleared, if set prior. It will go blank or state that Facial ID is enabled.
  8. Support will follow up with you 3-5 business days later to ensure a smooth transition process.

Monitoring & Reports

Once FID is active, you have visibility into the system through two reports:
  1. Facial ID API Status Report - Shows which vehicles are still in enrollment (camera may need adjustment), which vehicles have Driver ID enabled, and the overall status of your FID deployment.
  2. Facial ID Trip Report - Shows which trips have recognized vs. unrecognized drivers, so you can identify gaps in enrollment. You can also check individual driver enrollment status under Settings > Drivers > FID - Mobile App Status.
For additional information on reports, you can review the documentation here.

Support

If you have questions after setup, your HD Fleet support team are available to help. Common follow-up items include:
  1. Camera repositioning guidance
  2. Checking which drivers haven't yet enrolled
  3. Understanding report data
