FAQ: Surfsight Dash Cam

FAQ: Surfsight Dash Cam

Q. How can I change the date and time on my dash cam?

A. The date and time are determined by the mobile network of the dash cam. You can not manually change the date or time. You can however change the format of the time in the Settings menu of the dash cam.
Note
If a vehicle travels between time zones, the dash cam will automatically adjust to the new local time.

Q. What power source should the auxiliary cameras be connected to?

A. Auxiliary cameras are connected to the vehicle ignition power. They do not require constant power.

Q. Where can I access the hotspot settings?

A. You can locate them in the Settings menu, under WiFi.

Q. What is the difference between WiFi and hotspot?

A. WiFi is the technology that enables devices to connect to the internet or communicate with other devices wirelessly. A hotspot refers to a physical location on a device that serves as an access point from which other devices can access WiFi.
Caution
Using the dash cam for a hotspot may result in unexpected data usage and costs.

Q. What happens if the dash cam loses connection to the hotspot?

A. After the dash cam is connected to a hotspot, it stores the information of the hotspot for future access. If it loses the connection, it will reconnect automatically once the hotspot is back up.

Q. Do I need to manually reconnect the dash cam to the hotspot for any reason?

A. You will only need to manually reconnect it after a factory reset.

Q. Where are the WiFi settings?

A. In the Settings menu, under WiFi.

Q. If I connect my dash cam to a hotspot in the vehicle and I plan on using the WiFi as a primary, long-term connection, are there any issues I need to be concerned about?

A. We do not recommend this. If you use the hotspot in your vehicle as your primary connection, then the dash cam will lose connection every time you turn off the vehicle. This will disable standby features, can cause loss of diagnostic capabilities, and can cause connectivity issues in the future.

Q. Can I connect the dash cam to a vehicle's hotspot and then use the SIM card that is installed in the dash cam as backup, in case the WiFi loses connection?

A. Yes, but this means every time the dash cam loses connection, it will immediately rely on the SIM card for data.

Q. How can I improve the quality of the videos and recordings?

A. The quality of the videos and recordings is part of the data profile and is typically set according to data usage and data plans.

Q. How can I record for more than 60 minutes after the vehicle is turned off?

A. Currently, the dash cam can only record up to 60 minutes after turning off the vehicle.

Q. If I have turned the vehicle off and left it, how do I know that the dash cam is recording for 10 minutes?

A. The dash cam will record a minimum of 10 minutes after the vehicle is turned off, as long as it is connected to constant power.

Q. What do I do if I can't remember my PIN?

A. Try the default PIN of 3333, or contact HDFleet or your reseller.

Q. What units of measurement can I set my dash cam to?

A. You can set the dash cam to kilometers per hour or miles per hour. You can find this option under the Settings menu.

Q. Why do drivers not receive camera alerts when they should, or receive alerts when they shouldn't?

A. This usually happens when the driver's position is not set correctly, or if the upper body of the driver is not in view.

Q. Why aren't events triggered when they should be, or events are triggered when they shouldn't?

A. This usually happens when the driver's position is not set correctly, or if the upper body of the driver is not in view.

Q. Why are there so many false positives triggered for my dash cam?

A. This usually happens when the driver's position is not set correctly, or if the upper body of the driver is not in view.

Q. Is there a way to customize the amount of time to display a live view?

A. Yes. Live views can be customized via our API.

Q. Can rotating the dash cam trigger an event?

A. If the g-force is significant enough when you are rotating the camera, then an event may be triggered.

Q. Can the same encryption passwords be used across multiple SD cards?

A. The password is selected when the card is encrypted and is only connected to the card itself. The same password can be used for more than one card.

Q. What are the rules for creating encrypted passwords?

A. The password must be either 16, 24, or 32 characters.

Q. Does the position of the seatbelt affect how the dash cam triggers a Distracted Driving event?

A. Yes. It is best practice if the dash cam is located to the right of the driver.

Q. What is the IP (water resistant) rating for the dash cam?

A. There is no IP rating as the dash cam is installed inside the vehicle.

Q. Can the SD card of the auxcam be encrypted for data protection purposes?

A. No, because the auxcam does not store any private data.

Q. Can you change the hotspot password?

A. No.

Q. Can you use WiFi aux cams and connect to a 3rd party WiFi cloud connection to perform tests/demos without using SIM data?

A. Yes.

Q. What happens if I power off the dash cam using the master switch?

A. When battery power is used to power the dash cam, it will not record or function. If the battery remains in use, the dash cam won't be fully functional until the battery charges back up past 30%.

Q. Does connecting auxiliary cameras to a dash cam affect the recording time available on the dash cam?

A. When auxiliary cameras are connected to a dash cam, the memory is split between the dash cam and all connected auxiliary cameras.
